Afrofunk & Hiphop

Unchained XL (Hugh Ozumba) is a UK-born, Tāmaki Makaurau based Nigerian Kiwi rapper and producer. With his unique musical background of golden age hiphop, afrobeat, African highlife and punk rock, UXL creates unformulaic hiphop with themes of anti-racism, pan-africanism, cultural identity, faith and consciousness. UXL takes his inspiration from afrobeat legend and political icon Fela Kuti, as well artists like M.anifest, De La Soul, The Roots and A Tribe Called Quest.

2018 saw UXL’s reach expand globally, touring the UK with shows in London, Bristol, Sheffield, Leeds and Cardiff, performing alongside artists such as Mungos HiFi, Afro Cluster and Eva Lazarus. His  2019 release “The Migrant Mind” EP received global attention after having featured on international blog OkayAfrica due to its poignant commentary on the refugee crisis and violence faced by migrants. Drawing from his experience as an ex-metal vocalist, UXL always delivers a highly energetic and convicting live performance that will leave you searching for more.
